Title
The Capture of Major Andre
Subject
Andre, John (1750-1780)
Description
This image depicts the capture of Major John Andre by a group of "highwaymen" loosely affiliated with the Patriot cause. History credits this group with a lucky chance encounter that saved the day and uncovered the Arnold plot. However, the Americans clearly knew about the Arnold plot and most of the contents of Benedict Arnold's correspondence for several months beforehand. Documents created by Major Tallmadge suggest the Americans may have had other plans for dealing with Andre.
