This deposition reflects the capture of James Townsend, Robert Townsend's relative who briefly served as courier when the Culpers tried a new route. James was arrested by the Americans and Washington had to intervene to secure his release.

This report refers to Benedict Arnold's hunt for American spies within British occupied New York and Long island, it was written immediately after Major Andre's death. Townsend was in Setauket at this point.
